Congrats 9MMAR for passing the bicentennial mark on this thread
Thought I'd continue with the last discussion if that's okay.
Quoting Ryanair!!! (Reply 201): MAS needs to have something that nobody else has. If you look at their new premium products that was launched in 2005, using SQ as a benchmark, the former already had these First Suites since 1998. Or worse still, Swissair was the first to introduce them in 1995. So it is really passe.
Now their new product will last them for the next 8-9 years and after that, MAS would have to look deep within themselves at how to top their closest competitor at the next makeover. .
You're right. Fundamentally MAS need to decide the type of airline they want to be. The BTP talks about catering to tourists but also having a premium product. That sounds very much like no change to me. I wonder if that's enough to see the airline through.
For instance, they launched outdated products knowing full well that airlines like SQ were in the midst of upgrading theirs. Why, oh why? I think they should have taken a leaf out of NZ's books, who lept-frogged a step to a revolutionary flat-bed for Business Class, ala Virgin.
What's worse, in Malaysia, MAS decided to charge a premium on their outdated new F and C classes as if they were something nobody else had. Somebody didn't do a reality check!
What would have really been 'an experience redefined' would be to dispense with F, call the new First class cabin Business Class (now that would be miles better then even the new SQ 77W seats) and charging a premium for it, and installing the old GCC seats as premium economy. But hey, what do I know? I'm just one passenger whom MAS has chased away.
Quoting Ryanair!!! (Reply 201): Also... ground staff at KLIA. Smile a bit more boleh tak?
Actually, that's one aspect which has improved. They do smile now - it can come as quite a shock at first, but I am used to it now

Congratulation to us all for making it a success!
Quoting Airpearl (Reply 1): Thought I'd continue with the last discussion if that's okay.
You are most welcome. Your discussion with fellow A.Netter, Ryanair!!! is very interesting. I wish I could have some of the replies in the KUL-SIN route opening thread here.
Singapore Airlines, the world's biggest airline by stock market value, posted a 49% rise in quarterly profit -- just shy of market expectations (but) boosted by a one-off gain from the sale of its stake in a plane leasing business. State-controlled Singapore Air said October-December net profit was S$589 million (RM1.34 billion) compared with S$397 million a year earlier and an average forecast of around S$602 million from four analysts polled by Reuters. The result was boosted by a S$198 million gain from the sale of its 35.5% stake in Singapore Aircraft Leasing Enterprise (SALE) to Bank of China in December.
Singapore Air's shares have risen by nearly a third since August as the price of jet fuel -- the single-biggest cost item for airlines -- has dropped 22% from a high of US$93.20 (RM325.60) a barrel. The carrier, 57%-owned by government investment agency Temasek and the city-state's only global brand, is among the world's most profitable airlines thanks to its focus on cost and efficiency.
The airline is worth more than US$14 billion on the stock market, ranking it ahead of European rivals such as Lufthansa and British Airways and dwarfing most of the carriers in the United States in terms of market value. Singapore Air's full-year net profit is expected to increase 37% to nearly S$1.7 billion, according to 12 analysts polled by Reuters Estimates before Feb 9's results. -- Reuters

Minus the one-off gain from the stake's sale, SQ still achieves a remarkable net profit of S$391 million although slightly lower than the same quarter last year.

A tale of a pilot school in Malaysia.
Pilot school seeks status change
The Star
Notes
The only flight training school in the east coast, Asia Pacific Flight Training (APFT), is seeking approval from the National Accreditation Board to become a private institute of higher learning. Its principal and general manager Mej (R) Khalid Ali said the move could open up opportunities for those from poor families to become pilots because they would be able to apply for scholarships and study loans. Currently, most flight school cadets are either sponsored by airlines or self-financed.
Speaking to reporters after a graduation ceremony for 12 cadets who were sponsored by Malaysia Airlines, Mej Khalid said the flight school was working out a scheme with banks and charitable foundations to offer loan schemes to those who could qualify as cadet pilots.
Part of the school’s expansion plan was the purchase of 112 additional training aircraft and a US$1.5mil (RM5.24mil) flight stimulator, said Mej Khalid. Currently, the flight school has 120 cadets including 52 from Pakistan, Singapore, Sabah and Sarawak. In the future, it plans to take in cadets from Nepal and China.
Mej Khalid said the country was facing an acute shortage of qualified pilots due to the rapid expansion of the aviation industry in the region.

Should their application granted by the National Accreditation Board, the pilot school, Asia Pacific Flight Training (APFT) may become Malaysia's first flight training college university.

The new premium cabin products... under Md Nor and when was that?
The new NSD... under Fuuad... focusing more on premium products...
BTP... under current leadership... using all resources they have at the moment to turnaround the carrier.
Guess someone need to check their fact first... guess its not easy to make everyone happy/satisfy... easier talk than done.

Hinting that it is up and ongoing. Proved that MAHB's MYR 135 million upgrade works at KUL is for a reason and somehow, my signature is going to materialised anyway.

Quoting 9MMAR (Reply 3): Something to keep us asking on and on and on... "How did they do it?"
Say what you like about SQ - the biggest complaint seeming to be their 'robotic' cabin crew - they are boringly, yawningly consistent, and boringly, yawningly profitable as a result.

You're absolutely right. The new upgrades were ordered during Md Nor's time (when if you recall, the M'sian press touted his 'success' in turning around the airline). He left MAS in triumph to a plush job at the Securities Commission and is now chairing the Executive Committee of Khazanah Nasional, for goodness sake. Easily one of the most influential jobs in the country. Fuuad was just the fall guy after Md Nor left and made the scapegoat for everything wrong with the airline then.
I do sincerely hope your confidence in the current leadership will be justified, but I have seen too much crap going on at MAS over the years not be cynical.

Quoting MH1402 (Reply 2): Malaysia Airlines (MAS) trainee pilot crashed into the sea on Friday 10.02.2007
A follow up report on the incident.
Plane wreckage found hours after it crashed
The Star
Notes
The wreckage of the aircraft that crashed into the sea off Pulau Aman near here was discovered by marine police hours after the incident. Police said they managed to locate the tail of the aircraft that was found protruding at low tide on Friday night. Police were now waiting for the aircraft owner to salvage the wreckage.
So far only one witness – a fisherman who saw the aircraft circling several times before it crashed – had come forward to assist police in their investigation. The 54-year-old fisherman, Heah Soon Boay, rescued the pilot of the ill-fated aircraft Nor Azlan Yazid, 25, after he was spotted floating in the sea in a life jacket.
Police said the aircraft took off at 5.22pm and last contacted the control tower at the Bayan Lepas Airport at 5.38pm before it crashed. Nor Azlan was flying the two-seater Diamond D-40 HM Aerospace plane alone from the Bayan Lepas International Airport to Langkawi when the incident occurred some 20 minutes later.

Just found out the registration as 9M-HMQ. There is one picture of the said aircraft in the database.
