Just saw a story on the WGN morning news here in Chicago and they said that VX is looking for 8 daily flights and 2 gates for ORD. Didn't really have any timetable though of when they wanted to fly. And as usual, there was something wrong that only the true airplane nerds would spot. They got the Virgin America logo right, but the plane used in the graphic looked like a TWA B747.

Why would they need 2 gates for 8 flights?
FWIW, this isn't a huge shock... they could have started MDW service yesterday had they been interested.

OTS shoulder graphics (over the shoulder) are only available "en masse" bulk from licensed media services. It's a generic use ... and for good legal reason.

Gotta keep that CASM high
By 8 flights, does that mean 4 inbound, 4 outbound, for a total of 4 turnovers? If so, keeping the CASM high is the only reason that begins to make sense!

If you read the article, it says they plan on 4 flights to SFO and 4 flights to LAX. That would be
8pairs of slots or one for each arrival and departure.

Quoting Cubsrule (Reply 11): Not quite yet... one of two things is going to happen:
1) VX winds up in Terminal 5 (another excellent way to pad the old CASM) and has a really lousy schedule since there's no room there in the afternoon
2) VX doesn't start service due to a lack of gates.
I was going to say, last time I checked there were no open gates at ORD, the only way I can see them getting any is if DL/NW consolidate in L otherwise ORD is pretty much full up for gates. T5 might be there only option if they want to fly to ORD bad enough.

May seem like a stupid question....been awhile since I've been there but which terminal is T5 at ORD?

I don't think DL/NW could fit in L (at least at their current size). You might see CO and DL switch gates, and there might be a gate or two for VX in that shuffle, though.

Not a stupid question at all T5 is the international terminal, its the only one of the 4 the terminals that has common use gates as well. (well T2 might have 1 common use gate but I thought US had grabbed that one)

hmmmm that could work especially is there is an AA/CO alliance, my only question is are NWs and COs gates in T2 sub-leased from another airline?

US is the only one using E7, though I'm not sure what the lease status is. US definitely needs it, though. When HP was across the hall, NW and Privatair used it, and UA may have used it occasionally too.
Thanks.....I had no idea they could use the int'l terminal for any domestic flights.
When I worked at ORD, where T5 is was the cargo area. I think DL is the only holdout that still has a cargo building in that area but even they are planning to move to the southside, off Irving Park Rd. with all the rest. Or at least they were when they had money.
Just as an aside, before we had our cargo building (DL) built, we worked out of one end of the Flying Tigers building and then we got kicked out of there and had to move our outbound operation to the cargo building where PanAm, NW and AZ was. Our inbound was across the street from where the current cargo building was.
We still managed to handle 5mil pounds inbound and 5mil pounds outbound a month out of those locations.
