I arrived LAX late tonight and saw a flight 1805 to McAllen TX, something I'd never seen before. It's a redeye 738 non-stop leaving at 1:10AM, and runs tonight, tomorrow night, and the next, then as far as I can tell, stops running.
Anyone know the deal with this flight? It's not on their routemap...

CO is running a bunch of oddball flights in and out of LAX this weekend. This includes some LAX-MSY trips, one of which I am flying as I thought I had to be back in New Orleans for Monday morning (meeting since cancelled) and found going one way on United and one way on Continental cheaper than RT on United for the timings I needed.

CO for several years has been opportunistic and run such oddball routes during holidays and sometimes even for major sporting events.
I'd suspect determination of what routes would come come from O&D booking patterns indicating flows of traffic between cities.
There was actually a thread on this specific topic a while back.
Similarly other airlines also make the best of the market during the holidays. For instance United will often upgrade various market pairs with international widebodies to maximize seats during peak holiday travel days.

I know many folks in California with connections to the Rio Grande Valley, so I am surprised there has not been a dedicated flight, from either PHX, ELP, ABQ, or even LAX.
The 738 could be a tad too large for regular service; more suited to a CR7/CRJ/ER4, which, unfortunately, in my opinion negates the economics of the flight....little front-cabin pax; mostly VFR which as we all know is bottom of the barrel yield-wise.

Quoting Drerx7 (Reply 9): Last year a few widebodies went to Central America - Managua, Guatamala City, Mexico City, and I think SJO got 764s and 777s.
They had to come from somewhere, so I would assume that they were pulled off some EU routes since EU countries tend to limit travel on Christmas day, closing trains and even airports, and EU traffic declines that one day.

Quoting CALMSP (Reply 11): yes, and we are doing the same thing again this year. look for widebodies in many latin america/mex/carribean stations this coming holiday season.
do you guys just cancel flights completely into the EU, or downsize the planes and send some extra 752s to the EU and 767s to latin countries, or how is it accomplished?

I travel frequently to the Rio Grande Valley Area, especially MFE and HRL and I remember sawing in the TV, that American Airlines (Really not sure if it's American or Continental) were going to fly from MFE to LAX non stop. I search in both airlines in internet and no direct flights to LAX so maybe it's going to be next year or they cancel their intentions.
Cheers

we cancel the 2x service to cities such as IAH-LGW, and those out of ewr. those extra planes are used as well as a one-two day cancellation of service to cities such as MAD/FCO, etc. etc.

Quoting XAAPB (Reply 14): were going to fly from MFE to LAX non stop.
Did you read it would be permanent or maybe there was confusion? Because that flight does exist, this morning at 1:10AM, as well as two more days, on CO (the point of this thread).
I wonder if it's reloaded on Christmas? I'll check...
