Was sitting on the taxiway, waiting to cross the active departure runway when I watched a DC-10 come in to land. It was in the old UA paint scheme (grey and blue one) but was entirely debadged, and looking pretty ratty. Did someone pick it up recently? I was so shocked I didn't think to grab the tail number and then it was gone.
Interesting side note: A 747SP came in behind me, but I didn't recognize the livery. It was white, with a red cheat line, and two red stripes up the vert stab, one of which were words that I couldn't read from where I was. Two great opportunities, no good pictures! ARGH!

I believe this is a FedEx bird... probably heading over to their ramp on the SE side of the airport

Many ex-UA DC-10s went to FedEx to be converted for freighter operation. In fact I think some got the upgraded MD-10 flight deck. I thought they were all painted in FedEx colors by now, though.
(EDIT) There was a a FedEx DC10 flight from SJC that landed at around that time.

The old United plane is a FedEx inbound from the west coast, I believe. That particular flight is always a DC10, though I don't think it's always the same DC10.
As for the 747, is it possible it was Air India? They had a flight inbound from CDG today, and have a reddish scheme about them.

Yup, that's the one. How long has it been with them now? When the heck are they gonna repaint it too, that thing looks horrible.
I did think to myself it looked like the AI scheme, but the whole airplane looked squashed, and it didn't look like the 744 hump at all...but then I was craning my neck around at an absurd angle to see this stuff, since the landing runway was obviously behind me at this point and I was buckled in. I was also watching a CO 772 depart in front of me at the same time. Not a bad day to be standing between runways for 15 minutes.

I've seen this ugly hodge-podge land every time I've been spotting at MSP. It seems FedEx has rebuilt this thing using whatever parts were lying around the shop.

It must kind of irk UA. It's very recognizable as their paint scheme, even without the logos. Most airlines like their airplanes to be big flying billboards. This one makes them look pretty cheap.

Which begs the question: why hasn't FedEx put their livery on this old gal? When will they eventually get around to it?
It's been flying around like this for at least a year, so there's obviously no rush to paint it.
In July there was a Swiss MD-11 in the FedEx maintenance area at LAX, still in full Swiss c/s but with a US registration. Is this still flying round in Swiss colors or has it been repainted?

As for the DC10 in UA c/s, there are two. They are leased, originally they were going to be purchased but the leasor would not pay for the t/r upgrade. So FX told them that they were no longer interested in purchasing them. Since then the leasor has agreed to pay for the upgrade but FX has not changed their mind, yet.
The Swiss MD11's, there were a couple of them flying around not painted yet, about two or three weeks ago there were scheduled for paint. I didn't get a change to see them in the Swiss c/s, only after they were painted. About two weeks ago there was a new ( to us ) MD11 flying around, N577FE, an ex-Mandarin a/c unpainted. I can check when I return to work if it has been painted yet and where the ex-UA DC10's are if anybody is interested.
