China and Taiwan have agreed to allow direct flights between Taiwan and the Chinese mainland during the lunar new year holiday in February.
The charter flights, linking two cities in Taiwan and three in China, would be the first such services since 1949.
The Chinese negotiator said the charter flights would take place from 29 January to 29 February. The flights from the mainland would leave from Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou, while China-bound flights would depart from Taipei and Kaohsiun. In 2003, attempts to run direct flights have faltered, when charter planes were forced to divert to Hong Kong and Macau in order not to travel directly between China and Taiwan.

Its great news to hear that the "direct" flights have been established. I still feel its sort of stupid that the flights must fly over Hong Kong or Macau airspace. However, it is a step forward from 2003.

It is a great news for the direct flight between Taiwan and China. For the first direct flight from Taipei to Beijing, China Airlines and EVA AIR all want to be the first flight. As the schedule now, China Airlines is the first Taiwan airlines to land at Beijing. The CI-581 will departe from Taipei at 04:05am, Jan. 29 and will arrive PEK at 08:00 am. The CI-582 will return from PEK at 11:00am and will arrive Taipei at 3:00pm.
In China, both ShangHai Airlines and China Eastern Airlines want to be the first flight land at Taipei.
There is no direct flights between Taiwan and China for 56 years.

For the Taiwan careers, there will be 4 flights between Taipei and Beijing. 9 flights between Taipei/Kaohsiung to ShangHai. 11 flights between Taipei and CAN. There are 6 airlines in these routes include China Airlines, EVA AIR, Mandraid Airlines, UNI AIR, Far Eastern Airlines and TransAsia Airlines.
For the China careers, there will be 6 flights between Beijing and Taiwan which operated by Air China and Hai Nan Airlines. 10 flights between Shang Hai and Taiwan which operated by China Eastern Airlines and Shang Hai Airlines. 8 flights between CAN and Taiwan which operated by China Southern Airlines and Xaimen Airlines.

I read a couple of weeks ago that Taiwan's President intended to change the name of China Airlines to Taiwan Airlines or something like that. Basically, the intention was to further advance his goal of complete Taiwan's independence from China, Yet, the bad mid-term election's result his party got force him to stop the change. Am I right? Do these plans are history for good?

Taiwan government said that they don't care about Air China's aircarft land at Taiwan. But I don't think China government will let China Airlines to land in China if CI has ROC's national flag on it.
I just read a news in my lunch time. The first flight from Taiwan to China may be China Airlines (TPE-PEK). The first flight from China to Taiwan may be Air China (PEK-TPE). However, China's government may not let Air China to use their own aircraft due to the national flag on it.

Not true... the Nationalist flag is nowhere to be found on any China Airlines (Taiwan) aircraft... whereas the communist flag is prominently displayed next the name on Air Chinas' aircraft.
***The old China Airlines livery from about 6 years ago had the Nationalist flag on the tail.

The first charter flights between the countries has already begun two years as you can see a CI 744 at PVG. I believe a PRC carrier has yet to land in Taiwan though.

Two years ago, all flights need to land at Hong Kong or Macau. At this time, all fligjts can directly fly to the final destination without land at Hong Kong or Macau. Taipei-Beijing is the most meaningful route due to it is the direct flights between two capitals.^^

The news today report the China's carriers status.
Air China will use their sub company's aircraft to fly to Taiwan. They will use "Shang-Tou Airlines" to fly to Taiwan. The Air China's inagular flight from Beijing to Taipei will departe from PEK at 8:00am, Jan.29. The Air China's first flight from Beijing to Kaohsiung will departe from PEK at 8:10am, Jan.29.
Xaimen Airlines will be the first PRC's flight land in Taiwan. The will departe from CAN at 8:00am Jan.29 and will arrive Taipei around 9:40am.
Hai-Nan Airlines will be the first flight from Beijing to Taiwan. The flight will departe from PEK at 7:50am. It will arrive at Taipei at 11:50am.
Shang-Hai Airlines will flight Shang-Hai (PVG) to Taipei at 9:00am, Jan. 29.
All the China's careers have many promotions to the passengers, especially in the inagular flight. Most airlines offer some special gifts, special goods, special cabin (with Chinese New Year's style) and also the cabin crews will have ability to speak Taiwan Local Language.
