major international airlines operating at the Kotoka International Airport have cancelled their flights for Saturday, whilst others have delayed flights into Accra due to poor visibility over the Accra Flight Information Region.
Airlines such as the British Airways, South Africa Airways and Bellview Airlines have cancelled their flights outright, while Lufthansa and Kenyan Airlines have delayed flights into Accra.
Officials of these Airlines sad that the weather conditions on the West Coast of Africa was not conducive for smooth flight into Accra and added that, flight operations would resume on Sunday if the weather conditions improve
He said the harmattan had set in a bit late and its intensity was expected to subside by next week.
Giving statistics of the harmattan conditions, Mr Akabu said visibility is less than one Kilometre over the entire sub-region. Visibility over Accra is 400 metres, Lome 600 metres, Cotonou 400 metres and Abidjan 800 metres.

BA flight instead of leaving 23:00 yesterday it is schedule to leave at 5pm today

Been in Accra since 04Jan2005.
The Harmattan was quite a site on 08Jan and 09Jan. Dust was sooo thick we could not see the wall of our compound at the residence.
I am amazed that they did get as much to operate as they did. If ACC has Cat IIIb/c it might be different.
On other notes, The Haji flights finally got going. They had stranded pilgrims for over a week. The presidential inaug. event was fantastic. The number of VIP planes was incredible. However, a number of them were stuck in Accra unable to depart on Sat PM or Sun because of Harmattan.
I flew out Monday PM on KQ and it was the first day of normal ops since the problems. I return Sat on ET and hope it is operating.
Also, Virgin and BA had a number of flights diverted 02Jan thru 04Jan due to the haze/dust of Harmattan effect.

Yeah my brother mentioned seeing VS there, also th MEA flight from Lagos been cancelled formore than two days. last night there were 2 flights to ACC (charter) Monarch and Flyjet catching up

I was for three days in Sierra Leone untill sunday night.
Visibilty was quite poor there as well !! But still OK to handle flight ops at Lungi Airport (Heilcopter and aircraft). Though we flew at lower level than usual with the helicopter.
Reason was the winds coming from the desert.
I recall once when I was on an Abidjan lay-over that AF was obliged to cancel its flight due to this.

SAA WEST AFRICAN FLIGHTS AFFECTED BY EXTREME WEATHER
JOHANNESBURG. 10 JANUARY 2005. South African Airways' flights to West Africa had to turn back over the weekend due to extreme weather conditions caused by dust storms blowing off the Sahara desert.
Flights to Lagos in Nigeria, Abidjan in the Ivory Coast and Accra, Ghana were affected by sand storms and mist.
On Sunday SA088 on route to Abidjan, Ivory Coast and onwards to Accra, Ghana had to turn back to Windhoek in Namibia. This flight will leave Windhoek at 11h00 to return to Johannesburg today. The passengers will be accommodated on the scheduled Accra/Abidjan flight that departs at 16h30 today.
Friday's flight to Lagos, Nigeria had to turn back and landed in Luanda for fuel before returning to Johannesburg. Sunday's flight could land. The normal scheduled flight, SA060, will depart today at 14h55, with an additional flight, SA3060 leaving at 16h00 to take the stranded passengers from Friday's flight.
