Sorry if this has been discussed before, but I searched and found nothing. I was just curious why Paris Orly has no American traffic like London Gatwick does? I know Orly has customs and all, because several African flight I believe go out of it, but I was just wondering why no US airlines use it. Thanks in advance!

As CDG has expanded, the French Aviation Administration has switched all international carriers to that airport, leaving ORL as a domestic hub. I believe this is due to size constraints. The same thing was done when Le Bourget airport became too small.
ORL is now the French version of La Guardia airport in New York - close in, but hemmed in. CDG is the big international airport. And aren't there plans for an even newer airport?

If I am correct, it has to do with competition! With "OneWorld" and "Skyteam", and the others, providing "seamless" service with their partners requires use of common airports for connections. That is one reason most airlines want LHR vs. LGW! The "connection" potential means more revenue potential!

Why some talks about a third airport?
Simple in fact : CDG is a huge airport with 4 runways and can receive 80 million pax a year. When it was built, it was in the middle of nowhere, with 2 runways and a lot of preserved fields around for future extension.
With the time, in some little towns around the perimeter of the airport, a lot of people built houses because it was near Paris and the places to build were not expensive.
Now, these same people are ckaimeing that the airport is too noisy, that the traffic must be stopped at night (no curfew at CDG) and so on.
Because some people are stupid (they knew when they built their houses that the airport was meant to be bigger), traffic is now limited at 50 million pax a year and there are some talks about a third airport....in 20 years at best.

I have even heard that they would look at expanding Aeroport Beauvais-Tille to be the new Paris airport (FR would like that). Considering that they just built a major addition to Roissy, and now have to fix it, they seem to still want to use CDG

Almost everyone who moved from ORY to CDG seem to have been forced to make the switch. What's even more annoying is that there are no longer any flights between ORY and LHR or LGW. I sure miss the days of TAT / Air Liberte

No, but a few months ago, after the CDG terminal collapse, Paris airport officials tried to get AA to move back to Orly because CDG was getting to congested. AA refused. The funny thing is, AA was the last one to leave Orly, back in May 1999, because they loved it there. They were forced to move CDG, and now that airport officials want them back in Orly, they said they didn't want the hassle. It is too bad...I perfer Orly. Much easier airport to use, and closer to the city centre.

lcarus75, I guess US doesn't have a monopoly in this area. There are common grounds among US and France. Yes, we too have the same problem in the US.
