Hey guys, I've got a friend flying HP Friday PDX-IAH on HP. It's a direct flight, so he stops in PHX I'm pretty sure. I havn't flown HP since January 2002, so I don't really know what to tell him to expect on his flight, but I gave him a general idea. I know he's on a 737-300 though.
Was I right telling him to pretty much expect the usual pretzels and soft drinks on both flights?
After he gets to IAH, he flies IAH-ABQ...but I dont' know the routing. I'd be willing to bet it's through PHX again, and then coming home he flies ABQ-PDX through PHX again I think. Anything special to expect??

Well we don't have any meal service on those flights, so it will be beverage only. I don't know what else they serve as far as peanuts or pretzels go. As long as there are no Mesa flights, all should go well!!
I've flown out of IAH myself and the staff was very nice. The counter is a bit small though and I hear the lines can get pretty long.

I can tell you his boarding will probably be denied because he is traveling alone on an itinerary with connections.
HP/YV policy is to only allow UMs on one segment flights:
Children are our most precious cargo and we are committed to proper care and supervision. Children traveling without a parent or legal guardian are considered unaccompanied minors. Uniformed employees provide assistance for children traveling alone from the point of departure to their final destination.
* Children age 15 and older may travel unaccompanied without assistance.
* Children age 5-14 may travel unaccompanied on non-stop flights only for an additional fee* of $40 each-way; connecting flights are not permitted.
* Children under 5 years may not travel without a parent or legal guardian.

I have flown HP twice in the last year (SAN-BWI and SAN-MSP round-trip, through both PHX and LAS), and have found their service to be at or above the service on other airlines.
The standard drinks-and-peanuts service will be provided. A couple of times, there has been a round of trivia questions shown as in-flight entertainment. Headsets are $4 (although standard walkman-type headphones can be used) for a limited amount of entertainment. They might show a movie - that depends on the length of the flight.
The customer service people have all been very friendly and very much seem to enjoy their jobs. Both LAS and PHX are fairly easy airports to navigate, so the connecting flights should not be that difficult to find.
Let us know how the trip went!!

Also with HP you are able to Upgrade your ticket to F class, If F seats are available on the day of the departure. The Upgrade fees are quite reasonable!

I think this policy was put into place after the Summer of losing kids took place. Not sure of the exact year, though there was a Summer that HP had more than its share of misconnected and UM's placed on the wrong flights, it really got the media attention.

That's right.
Besides, the minimum age for flying by yourself in connecting flights was changed 1 and a half years ago. It was changed from 13 years to 15.
You may be expecting a good growth from HP as it is one of the few US carriers showing profit.
As you may know, America West started flying from both, SFO and LAX to JFK and BOS (I think it has now two or three frecuencies per day), plus another flight to IAD from LAX. All of these on A319's

Even though HP implemented the one segment only rule for UMs, we still run into issues almost daily with UMs being on multiple segment flights. Generally we are good about fixing this in the hub,but alot of times in the outstations the UMs are sent to PHX being told that they will be fine to get to whereever they need to be without any problems.
