I was driving on 101 southbound this morning (around 8:35 am) and as I passed SFO I saw an airplane (a small biz jet) taking off from runway 19R. At this time I saw a bunch of airplanes waiting to take off on runway 1L and 1R (BTW, there's the United 737 in the new livery holding short of 1L). Anyone knows the reason for the weird 19R departure?

Thats hard to believe. Are you sure he did not depart 28R? They usually leave on 28R and intersection Echo and fly toward the coast. The only other thing could be they told him to go-around and they let him just do a 180 towards the hill then swing back around and land. That would make it look like he was taking off 19R. If any planes take-off 19R, I would have heard it from my office.

I found that believable....My brother, a pilot for Skywest, told me that there are very rare ocassions when planes take off from RWY 19 towards the hills in San Mateo/Burlingame...He also added that there are rare times when planes even land from the south, up on 101 and then turn sharply to line up for rwy 1R, very much like Kai tak's checkerboard approach...that's a sight to see and you're very lucky if you witness one since that's very rare.

Mac...what he means by rare is when the weather causes this. It is very, very rare to arrive on 1R/1L. Maybe 1 or 2 times a year during strond Santa Ana type winds. Its not as rare to see a 19R departure when there is a storm and winds are from the south at over 15 kts. Its almost impossible though to see a 19R departure when planes are departing the other way on 1L/1R. Not to mention when they are departing on 1L/1R the depature path would lead to head on path with arrivals on 28R/28L. I can almost assure you it was a go-around or a 28R departure. Once again I would have hear a plane depart that way and my co-worker was out taking photo's at that time and saw nothing. He did see bisjets departing on 28R.

AsSFO is right on about this. Departures from the 19s do happen, but DUE TO WEATHER (especially winds). When this happens there are almost never any aircraft down on the 1L/1R end of the runway. Given that there WAS aircraft waiting for departures on the 1s AND the weather is perfect I can almost guarantee you it was a go around or a departure of 28 with a quick turn.

As for arrivals on 1R. It happens once or twice a year IF EVEN. I have pics of it. Will try to upload them soon.

As739x, I'm 100% certain that it took off from 19R because it was climbing over 101 and making a right turn toward the west. I'm a regular spotter/photographer at SFO so I know pretty well all the departures.

Actually what I'm not sure is whether it was a small jet or a turboprop. In any case it was a private airplane as it was white and no airline marking.

What made me wonder is that this morning the wind was calm and all other airplanes were taking off on 1L and 1R.

Couldn't even be 19L?

Could it have been a low pass by a DOT aircraft checking the ILS or something?

Timz...good point but I doubt at that time of morning. Very busy! FOX...Well you saw what you saw but I had a buddy out there also taking photo's and said he saw nothing like that. If he took off 19L/19R and turned west he did something no other plane has ever done! No planes takeoff and go SW of the airport. Noise restrictions! Hard to explain what you saw but I still think it was a 28R departure. Where exactly where you when you saw it fly over? Near the terminal or rental garage?
