El Loco Gordo has confirmed what's been postulated here for nearly a year now.
Last night on CNBC's "Kudlow & Cramer"; Bethune, while speaking of Continenal's international partnerships, stated "we've just now begun our alliance with Delta, and behind them is SkyTeam, which includes [Skyteam airlines listed] and we're gonna be a part of that, probably sometime next year"
Good stuff!

As Star is getting two north American carriers (UA and US), other alliances are looking for a second partnership in the transatlantic market. DL+CO in Skyteam, nice pick. I just wonder who will partner AA with...

I tend to believe that this deal will happen. First off, joining SkyTeam would be nothing more than bringing back relationships prior to SkyTeam. Before SkyTeam started, CO had code-share deals with AF, AZ, and I believe OK. With these airlines in SkyTeam, CO was forced to go elsewhere. However, I wouldn't doubt that they wouldn't mind having these partners back.
Also, Aeromexico would be a tremendous partner for CO to have. CO is very strong already on transborders out of IAH, AM would be able to give more passengers to these routes potentially.

I still have my doubts. When KL joins skyteam, how will that work out for CO, DL and NW? Incl AF you will have 5 strong transatlantic airlines in one alliance..........

Watch for NW to make a similar move with KLM. Skyteam and Wings are both too small to compete with Star and OneWorld on their own, so this move by CO might be the first step in merging the two alliances. A merged Skyteam and Wings could compete better with the other two alliances. It would also work wonders for my frequent flyer miles, seeing that they're all with CO, DL, Air France, and KLM.

Cba,
perhaps what he means is that his CO miles would therefore become useable on all SkyTeam members instead of just DL....

oh man I'm excited about this....not just from a nonrev point of view either. Before I worked for the Skyteam Air Line I work for now, I was a Silver in OnePass. Was always impressed with CO's service, looking forward to working with them!

This makes sense for many reasons.......
CO is a partner with KL, KL is moving towards an alliance with AF, AF is already partners with AZ, KL was going to work very closely (almost merge) with AZ at one time, CO had deals with AF and AZ, CO and NW now work with DL, DL is a founding SKyteam partner with AF, etc, etc
Look for CO (and NW) to hook up with SkyTeam via their relationship with KL.
The history of inter-airline relationships does sound like incest, the game the whole family can play.

Don't fprget Mr. Anderson hinted a long time ago when the DL CO NW deal was up for approval that we would be eventually joining SkyTeam. Come on, it only makes sense. We used to be partners with AZ and of course KLM will join too. Together SkyTeam would be far larger than OneWorld or Star.....

I do not understand well the operation of alliances, so I may be asking a stupid question, but how does this help Delta? They currently will take all traffic entering the US by other Skyteam members that must continue onto a point not served by that other airline. By adding CO, they no longer have sole control over that traffic. It certainly helps Skyteam because it gives all of the other members more choices for their customers, but I don't see how it helps Delta. Either way though, I'm very excited to see this because I'm a Delta fan, so that makes me a Skyteam fan by default. I have flown mostly Delta since I was two years old (moved to Cincinatti just before I was two, then moved to Atlanta when I was seven and live here still), so I like them a lot now.

How does this help delta? I suspect the bean counters have figured it out, but intuitively, I would say that adding new airlines to the alliance adds new destinations to which Delta can sell tickets. The cost is possibly losing some to CO, NW, etc. But that's assuming it's a zero-sum proposition; however, I suspect Delta is expecting that the team will generate more revenue than the sum of its former individual entities.

Great News! Good carriers, I can burn my mineral level AAdvantage card (after redeeming the last mile of course!) Worth the connections, great business strategy, good on CO.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Alaska join oneworld. They already have a very strong partnership with AA. Their strong west coast ops would be a nice edition to oneworld.
