Might be a chance for one or two of you to catch something different at Stansted - I hear that the Orbis mobile eye surgery is scheduled to arrive at STN shortly.

Where is it based usually? Or is it in constant use so that it moves around all the time?

I believe that it is based in NY at JFK but it moves around all the time. Correct me if I'm wrong though.

There's people collecting donations in the main terminal at TN, and I've seen a whte MD11 from the distance, parked in the cargo area. I thought it was World Airways (it had an oval black logo on the side like World Airways) but now it all makes sense.

Pity the weather is a bit poor for photography, with all the fog...

Regards

Ikarus

Ikarus: The Orbis plane is definitely a DC-10, not an MD-11. Here's a picture of that plane:

Some more information about the: Orbis International is headquartered in New York, but their plane is mostly operating in Asia and Africa. The DC-10 was originally donated by United Airlines. Since UAL doesn't have anymore DC-10s in it's fleet, FedEx is now taking care of the maintenance (also a donation). The airplane is used to train local doctors and medical personel in eye surgery. It's the mission of Orbis to eliminate avoidable blindness. It's a great non-profit organisation which deserves the support of us all.

For further information about Orbis, there is a short report on Airsider:

Or you can visit their website at http://www.orbis.org/.

Does Orbis offer any tours of their plane? From the photos on their website, it looks quite interesting.

The DC-10 was originally donated by United Airlines.

This aircraft had nothing to do with United Airlines. Former G-GCAL [Cal Air/Novair International Airways Limited], former N183AT [American Trans Air], and former G-BELO [Laker Airways]. 46501, the second off the production line, and spent her early years as a test aircraft.

Yes, this is indeed the #2 DC-10 built. It was a test aircraft in the beginning, then went to Laker Airways. The oldest DC-10 existing & still in service. Orbis is a very worthwhile cause. The mission is to restore eyesight to people around the world who cannot afford any treatment or surgery at all. Not being a braggert here, but I have contribute money to this orginization, and in return I've gotten those 'return address labels' with the DC-10 imposed in the background. Very worthwhile & 'feel good' cause here.  Wink/being sarcastic Regards.

Oops, did I have wrong information here? Sorry about that. But I'm pretty sure UAL did the maintenance for the DC-10.

By the way, before the DC-10, Orbis had a DC-8. That one was from UAL, right?

The DC-10-10, N220AU, will be present at Stansted until the 9th April, according to the UK Orbis website at http://www.ukorbis.org

The Project Orbis DC-8 was a former United plane, the fourth DC-8 built, but I do not know if it went directly from UAL to Orbis.

I was lucky to visit this aircraft in the Hanger at Kai Tak airport and outside the Hanger at CLK.

Even saw the DC-8 once in Cebu.
