After recently redeeming trips to Japan and Yellowstone, my wife and I now each have only about 4,000-10,000 miles on AA, UA, and NW, except I have around 60,000 on AA. The grand total is about 96,000 miles, spread over 6 accounts.
Is there any good way to combine the miles from all of these accounts into one, so that we could have more options for redeeming? Last night I learned of points.com, which seems to allow you to swap miles between airlines and between people, but it was a little sketchy on the details (i.e. are there fees, are the miles traded 1-for-1, etc.?). Have any of you ever used this service? Are there other similar services? What is your impression of them?

Basically they buy you miles to transfer them, so if you turned in your AA miles you would have 30K left on NW etc. The best way is to keep them all, each will get you points on their alliances, AA Oneworld (crappy), UA Star Alliance (good), and NW with Skyteam (Best)

So if you swap miles from one acct to another, their ratio is seriously like 1:2?? Wow, that's not worth it. Frustrating, though, as I was hoping to use all 96,000 to go on a nicer trip, soon, than the 60,000 will allow.

Sounds like you're starting all over on some accounts. I'm guessing the US Carriers will start not giving miles to the lowest fares like some of the international carriers are doing, so maybe miles won't be important to you in the future anyway.
