G'day All,
Life priorities at the moment mean (whilst I can afford) I can't justify $900 odd for Adobe Photoshop 3.
I've got an Imac and Apple are advertising Aperture 2 for AUD $260 (Can justify)
I shoot with a Canon DSLR 350D (I've only one shot on the DB and that was kindly edited by a fellow A.neter ... thanks Tom!) and of the 2000 odd shots I've taken lately, at least a dozen are A.net-worthy ... albeit with editing.
Will purchasing Aperture 2 allow me to edit my pics to A.net standard?
or
should I just wait till I can justify forking out for Photo Shop3?
I really appreciate your feedback and advice.
Thank you kindly.
Cheers
Sean

Hi Sean,
One option for you might be to try and snare Photoshop CS2 if you can find it still available. Ringing around some of the specialist stores catering to graphic design might reveal some that still have a copy that didn't go back to Adobe.

Alternative: maybe www.ebay.com. I got mine there (new version of CS2 and CS3 upgrade..) and payed with taxes, toll and shipping from the US to Europe about 340€ which is 1/3 of the price I am supposed to pay here in Germany (over 1000€)!
Another alternative but at least for me it would have been more expensive is to download the software at the adobe page in the US and buy it there, as in Germany you wouldn't have to pay any toll, as it are only data that are transferred and that is toll free! Don´t know if it is the same in Down Under
Can't say anything to aperture 2 as I have no experience with it!
Hope this helps a bit!
Cheers
Björn

Thanks Chris and Bjorn,
Both good ideas and I'll check them out.

Ouch!
I've downloaded a 30 day trial for Aperture 2 so I'll have a play with it on the weekend and see if I can get my 25% acceptance rate even lower [It would be 0% if not for Tom's editing skills!]
If any one else has experience of Aperture 2 I would still like to hear your opinion(s).
Cheers

Aperture is more of a companion for Photoshop (like Lightroom is). It does not replace it. You will still need Photoshop (or Elements) because Aperture is a RAW converter and organizer - it, like Lightroom, has only a fraction of the functionality of Photoshop but that's because they do two different things.

Indeed - OR Elements. PS Elements 5.0 has all the tools you'll need to edit your images to A.net standard - and more. I use it and my acceptance ratio percentage is in the 70s so it's not like it has any serious limitations.
Karl
P.S. Forgot to mention - PS Elements 5.0 is also a lot cheaper than CS2/3 (you'll be able to pick it up for around GB£60 or EUR90, probably even cheaper 'Down Under'!)

Guys, what's wrong with the Elements series? Why spend mega-bucks (or pounds where I come from) on what, for me at least, is simply an overkill package? If all you require is to edit them to a satisfactory degree, i.e. to get images accepted here, then why not just plump for Elements at a fraction of the price? It is available for Mac isn't it? Then (here's the best bit) spend the cash you've saved on camera/lens upgrades. Surely it's better to throw money at the camera than at an expensive commodity?

I didn't say there was anything wrong with Elements. I was agreeing with Jeff that waiting for Elements 6 would be a great idea.

CS3...for 900Aus$ !! You lucky b******d !!
It cost me £580 in the UK. That's 1344Aus$.
We get ripped off big time by Adobe in the UK. I saw CS3 for $US640 ( £320 ) and tried to buy it from the US website. As soon as I clicked on it I got transferred to the UK website with its higher price.
....but to return to your original question. PS Elements will indeed be more than adequate for your needs. To make life even cheaper, PS7 is available for free on some magazine cover discs and I believe can be downloaded for free as well.

PS7 also also quite good - it was adequate back then, and it is still very capable. So if you can find that, it may be an even better solution.
Just to make you more envious - I snapped up the whole CS3 Web Premium with everything for AU$810. Yes it was an upgrade from my old MX Studio 2004, but boy was I happy getting Illustrator CS3 as part of the deal.

I currently use Aperture 1.5.6 and I also have Lightroom which I am evaluating before diciding to upgrade to Aperture 2.0.
Neither replace PS, but they are now my preferred method of grading, processing, cataloging and fine tuning my images. These applications don't have the scope of PS, but I can't see any reason why images that are good in the first place won't be good enough for Anet acceptance. In your shoes Aperture complimented by Elements may be a great combo.
The other thing to consider is what Mac you are using. I have an Intel MacBook Pro but needed to get CS3 as CS2 was known to underperform on Intel Macs. I don't know for sure but that same may apply in reverse with Elements 6 and CS3 for non-Intel powered Macs.
