I just have a regular Radio Shack scanner. It works great for listening to ATC. I listen to it all the time. I live close enough to DTW to hear the action at home. I usually have it on when I am working at my desk. It is 10 years old so it doesn't have any trunking stuff on it, so it doesn't work so great for most police radio traffic anymore.

I also have a nice, cheap Radio Shack hand held - not only for air, but fire, police bands and my favorite - trains.

It even works for the auto races. Don't remember what I paid for it - but not $75 - though it was 10 years ago.

One thing about ATC though. I used to live a few blocks from KADS and could hear everything very well for their tower.

I could also hear the towers from KDFW, but not many off the aircraft I could see on approach out my front door.

Today I live near the Sachse Center radar and can hear Dallas area Approach and Departure very clearly - but few aircraft.

The center and tower transmitters are much stronger and easier to pick up at a distance than aircraft.

EDIT - I'm at work and cannot be sure - but I think what I have is the PRO-135 - lists for $99.99 today on radioshack.com.

If you are hearing DFW or Ft. Worth in Sachse better than the aircraft, it's probably because you are near their remote radio sites. Don't know about DFW, but the Center has some up around Bonham.

That RADAR in Sachse is an ASR-9. It is piped in to both DFW and Ft. Worth Ctr.

I don't understand everything I don't know about this.

I see you are in the States right now. A Radio Shack or similar airband will work fine. You may want to consider spending a bit more money and get something with 8.33 khz spacing. When you return to India you may need it. I don't know about India, but Europe has gone to an 8.33 khz scheme.

I got a RadioShack PRO-83 a few years ago for $100 (I think it's still the same price). It's a great scanner! 200 channels. And it's indestructible! I've dropped it many times, thrown it across the room (ok that was an accident lol), gotten it wet several times, and taken it apart a bunch of times. Mind you, it's got some tape holding on the battery cover, but it's still working like a champ! Big grin I would like to get a new one in the future, possibly a trunking scanner. But for now this works just fine. I would say my $100 has gone a hell of a long way.
